BTW I was at a firepower demonstration around 1962 at Eglin AFB.

They demonstrated a sonic boom with an F-104. I came across the sky totally quiet and seemingly not that fast. Then it hit!

I suspect something went wrong as the noise was well above what was necessary to do hearing damage and the shock to the body was real and uncomfortable.

I would bet money that people suffered from it, maybe later in life.

I haven't heard one in decades so it's reasonable to assume that anyone who has never heard one would be spooked if one occurred....

Why don't we hear them anymore?
