I'm not sure about the Muslim designation. His surname appears to be a "caste" name, if you go digging around for Indian/Bengali roots.

While it is the tradition to adopt an Arab/Islamic name when converting to Islam, Subcontinent India has a long history with Islam, Hinduism and Buddhism and thus, I believe, the name is not an absolute indicator.

Yeah, I didn’t realize that Bengal had been conquered by the Islamic Moghuls, and that it’s more than 50% Muslim [53%].
