Weren’t they working on a land bridge on the eastern tip of Crimea that is close to a peninsula jutting out from the rest of Russia?

This just sounds like more alarmist press from the Ukraine.

Foundation of Kerch Strait bridge already numbers over 1,000 piles (photo)

Over 1,000 piles have already been driven at the construction sites of both sea and land sections of the Kerch Strait bridge. The Crimean Bridge information center says the milestone pile was driven into the foundation of the support structure for a railway on the Kerch side.

According to Kairat Tursunbekov, deputy head of Uprdor “Taman” (federal government institution that ordered the construction), the pile driving operations are underway at all the construction sites, 24 hours per day.

All in all, there will be 7,000 piles including almost a thousand prism piles (400mm x 400mm), one of the key types of pile foundation applied in Russia, both in industrial and civil engineering.

48 piles and 400 cbm of concrete will be used for each support structure.

The foundation of the highway and railway sections on the Taman side of the bridge will be made of almost 800 bored piles. Support structures in the area with the most challenging geological conditions, water area of the Kerch Strait and the Tuzla island, will rest on the foundation made of over 5,500 pipe piles.
