The Criminal Court in Jeddah has quashed a seven-year prison sentence and 2,100 lashes for an Indian man convicted of blasphemy because he converted to Islam while in jail, but he will still have to pay a fine of SR30,000.
The Appeals Court endorsed the verdict, but the public prosecutor objected to the decision, a local daily reported on Wednesday. He was arrested last year at the airport as he was trying to leave the country to go home.
The man had displayed an image on Facebook showing the Holy Kaaba plastered with Hindu deities. The image had created a furor in many Indian cities last year. The report said a Saudi national, shocked by the image, alerted Haia. After that, a probe was launched.
The expat admitted that the Facebook page was his, but said he had seen a link to the photo on another account and that he had to click Like to enable him to see it. The photo was automatically loaded onto his account for his followers to see.
7 years and 2,100 lashes for a funny picture! Dovetails nicely with the human rights article posted above.
Note to self: If ever arrested in Saudi Arabia, forget the lawyer - convert to Islam.
