Not being an Astrophysicist....Nor do I play one on TV....I think that what we are seeing is an unstable perturbation of the Sun's magnetic field.
basically the Sun's magnetic field is declining.

I am a physicist (amongst other things). OK, technically an engineer, but my Masters had a heavy physics focus.
