Homeboykris, a 9-year-old horse, died shortly after winning the first race of the day.
The Maryland-bred horse came from behind to win the race as a 9-1 underdog. It collapsed on the way back to the barn after exiting the winner’s circle.

Four-year-old Pramedya collapsed in the middle of the fourth race with a broken left front leg and was euthanized on the track. It was the fifth start of the filly’s career. The horse’s jockey, Daniel Centeno, broke his right collarbone in the fall and was taken to a local hospital.
A cause of death for Homeboykris has not been determined. The horse will be taken to New Bolton Center Hospital in Pennsylvania for a necropsy.

If my horse slips, falls and breaks his leg on the trail tomorrow, would that be inhumane of me?
I don’t own 3 horses, including a BLM mustang, just for the pleasure of feeding them. I take care of them, and expect them to carry me for my pleasure. I don’t like modern Thoroughbred racing - I’d prefer a 3-4 mile minimum - but I can’t put it down because horses are being used to entertain people. Not when I own 3 for MY entertainment!

It depends on the level of risk being taken, just like driving a car at 70mph is not the same thing as driving it at 120mph.
I sure do love my Spanish Mustang,great trail horse-always thinking.A horse that’s willing to work with you.Same for our Missouri Foxtrotter except he’s not nearly as smart.
My daughter had a small horse named Tiny Horse. He was always old. When she died in 2002 some farm friends in Kansas took Tiny in and he lived a life of luxury until he died in 2012. Vet there said he was the oldest horse he had ever seen and the vet was almost 70.
Great that you took Moon Ace in. Sure you have some wonderful memories. Not sure why people just never tend to their own business.
Some dogs love to run and will do it whenever they get the chance. Sight hounds will do that to chase anything that moves. They don’t have to be taught it.
That said, it’s unconscionable to take advantage of an animals natural instincts and abuse it for profit, which is what dog racing does.
And the same with any other animal *entertainment.*
We tend to breed the smarts out of critters.

I just turned on to NBC and the Preakness just started. They didn’t mention anything in the opening about those 2 poor horses......they might have by now......I can’t watch it this time. The track is muddy and I certainly can’t handle seeing another possible tragedy. I pray to God it doesn’t happen........;(
That's the attitude of the busy bodies and do gooders. Are you one of those? How about a Vegan, or do you enjoy meat, milk, and eggs? I believe that your comment is as ignorant as are those people.
We tend to avoid horses as food, unlike much of the world, but we embrace them for a very wide range of sports. In exchange for this partnership with people, horses are very well cared for and most live a comfortable existence long after they are unable to participate. Without this arrangement, horses would essentially disappear except a few in some petting zoo.
I think the owners of the horse that broke its leg today also owned Barbaro. Might be the body type they like does not always hold up for racing. Many people like the small boned horses thinking they look better, look more like runners. People need to understand the weight distribution of a horse, mostly on the front legs and the amount of stress.

Horses that are willing to exert that kind of try and heart love doing it. Horses that don’t love it, no way they make it to that level. Horses that have a lot of self-preservation usually don’t make outstanding athletes. Very much like human athletes, some have the drive and want to and others do not. Horses that are true athletes push themselves to go faster, harder. That extra from the horse is what makes a winner, that cannot be forced. A race at this level- they are all outstanding athletes, all winners.
My daughters barrel raced and my oldest daughter’s horse had more heart and try than anything I have ever seen. He often outran horses that he should not have been able to. I told my husband one day that he loved running barrels. My husband said no way did horses love that stuff, they did it because they had no choice. I told him if they were forced to do it they would never be that good. This conversation was repeated several times over the 15 years my daughter competed on that horse. We decided to retire him, just due to age he had no injuries. He would run down the road nickering behind the trailer when we left to go to rodeos. He would act so broken hearted we got him fit again and let my youngest daughter run him at barrel races close by so he wouldn’t have the big hauls. She let him run whatever speed he wanted, not even asking him to run but he ran his heart out and was so happy he could go again.
Horses are amazing creatures, some people do exploit them and it is so sad.

No, it’s the attitude of someone who has respect for life.
Was Bill or Hill in attendance at the track during that time? What about BO’B. Time to round up the usual suspects. Sounds like someone has been watching too many Godfather movies. Autopsy would prove interesting indeed. Two dead horses in one day sounds implausible.
Moon Ace was taller and faster than the other horses we had. He had a very good disposition not high strung like you might expect from an animal bred to go fast. But you didn't want to jump on him bareback especially if he was pointed toward the barn. It was a good way to get a black eye. My teachers used to think I was an abused kid because of all the spills I took. I still have dents in my scull from those days.
Moon Ace put up with me and my brother and sisters and later my nieces and nephews. Everyone loved him even when he looked like a saggy old sack of horse flesh. By the time he and Morningstar left this world for horsey heaven I think they were both half blind. Morningstar still had a few teeth left. It is probably silly but I like to think that my old friends are running around green pastures together, restored to their former glory. They were both beautiful animals in their youth.

Don’t think it is silly at all. I am one of those that think there is a special heaven for animals we loved and who loved us. Your old friends may just have gained some wings though.
Ruffian hit the gate throwing her weight on the right front leg. The break may have happened right there. But with adrenaline flowing and the urge to run she just kept going. Vasquez tried to pull her up when he realized what had happened but she refused to quit.

I so agree. Call me “PETA” for recognizing the excesses and the abuses that these way too highly bred and highly strung horses are put through.
Races are old as the hills, but it’s an industry now full of drugs and money.
Give me the fun and freshness of a simple field race or road run, between a couple of hearty ranch quarter horses used to running and leave it there.
