Surgically to mutilate? What’s so wrong with “to surgically mutilate” ?Hmmmmmmm?

Split infinitive. I would have chosen “to mutilate surgically,” or even rephrased the sentence entirely to eliminate the adverb. Adverbs are dangerous little devils: their placement nearly always impacts the meaning of a sentence.
