NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) The Nuisance Wildlife Agency continued to search for a possible rabid squirrel that attacked some residents Tuesday afternoon in North Myrtle Beach.
According to incident reports from the North Myrtle Beach Department of Public Safety, law enforcement responded to a home on Causey Drive, where a woman said a squirrel attacked her while she was walking to her car.
Responding officers indicated the woman showed them scratch marks on her right arm and upper back, the report stated.
A little more than an hour later, officers were sent to a Watson Drive address. There, they spoke with a man who said a squirrel climbed up the front of his truck trying to get to his granddaughter, according to the report.
The man said the squirrel then jumped on him and bit his hand. During the struggle, he fell to the ground and scraped his elbow, the report stated.
Russell Cavender, also known as the Snake Chaser, informed the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control and said he would try to capture the animal.
Police also contacted DHEC and asked the agency to send flyers to be distributed throughout the neighborhood warning residents of a possible rabid squirrel, the report stated.
If the animal is captured, DHEC requested it be sent to Columbia for rabies testing.
I don’t want to say it’s rabies but its rabies. Do they still give the shots in the stomach? My worst nightmare.
I was on a golf trip in Noth Myrtle. One of the fellows, a Brit, was a nature watcher. These squirrels were huge, with black and white faces and had ringed tails. The did not run away when you got close to them.
The was a Lyle blond at the halfway house. The Brit said to her, theses squirreles are amazing. So big and interesting I have nver seen anything quite like them. Do they have a name?
The girl drawled in response, “Some of them do.”
We have a golf course across the street so.......squirrels! I’ve had them come after me when I gave them crap. Hubby says I’m nuts that they don’t do that but I swear it. Had one come across a tree limb and jump on top of our patio after me. Lol
One of the few wild animals that have ever attacked me was a squirrel. I was just a kid, my dogs were barking wildly, and I went to see what was going on. There was a squirrel up on the brick wall of the house, cornered where the den came out from the bedrooms. Very agitated, but then two barking dogs had it more or less treed. I tried to get the squirrel to come to me, and it did. Jumped off the wall and latched onto my fingers with it’s teeth. Hung on for several seconds, during the commotion it let go and scampered away.
I always post it on any squirrel threads I run across.
The meanest squirrel doesn’t stand a chance against a 16 gauge shotgun.
My uncle shot them, my aunt prepared them, with the best home fries this side of heaven. Some memories you can reach out & taste.
GENIUS!!!
I haven’t laughed this hard in weeks. Thanks! [BTW-I hate squirrels]
When asked why they were attacking, one squirrel replied, because people are just nuts.....”
LOL Looks good except I think of them as rats, so hard to swallow.
Squirrels almost never get rabies.
Yes, most likely territorial and lost his fear of humans due to being fed...
LOL!
