Still scratching my head (and chuckling) over this one especially since a search on Adelson's bio reveals no Welsh coal miner relatives. Perhaps Adelson and Loretta Lynn (coal miner's daughter) are cousins?

The same line worked great for both Joe Biden AND Neil Kinnock. Why shouldn’t he use it?

Why wouldn’t he be the grandson of a Welsh coal miner.
(I mean, yeah, I presumed he was Jewish. But you combine the Jewish stereotype for loving diamonds, with the Welsh stereotype of never wanting to pay for someone, and SOME Welsh guy must’ve figured if he got into coal mines, he’d find his own diamond mine.)

Never heard of her.
Why would it matter who some writer’s ancestors were?

Searching geni.com (probably get the same on other genealogy sites) Sheldon Adelsons mother Sarah Tonkin was born in England. The family (Tonkin/Tonken) seems to go back quite a long way in England. So on his mothers side they aren't Eastern European. Maybe his grandpa on his mother side really was a coal miner. https://www.geni.com/people/Sarah-Adelson/6000000000369382634 Sarah Adelson (Tonkin) Birthdate: March 5, 1907 Birthplace: England, United Kingdom Death: Died May 6, 1985 Place of Burial: Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts, United States Immediate Family: Daughter of Abraham Tonken and Gert Tonken Wife of Arthur Adelson Mother of Gloria R. Not all minors are coal minors.
Diamond, gold , silver .... Lots of different types of minors.
He could have been a minor of a different variety.

Totally credible. Adelson looks like he has been at the bottom of a mine for 40 years and only recently surfaced!

Why couldn’t his Grandad have been a Welsh coalminer?
Are there not coal mines in Wales, or weren’t they present years back? I’m not losing any sleep over this, but just wondered why he shouldn’t be believed.

He “identifies” as a transgendered coal miners daughter. Get with it!

He sings a mean tenor “Men of Harlech.”

His mother is Sissy Spacek.

Oh come out and say it. How many Jewish coal miners were there in Wales 100 years ago?

I don't understand what's "perplexing." Americans' ancestors are from everywhere, and every walk of life.
One of my progenitors was a soldier from Kiev. So?
To: PJ-Comix
Although rough and dangerous work, coal mining drew eager migrants to Wales, including Jews. For Adelson, having a grandfather who did hard manual work means that his own long, varied, and outstandingly successful business career is all the more remarkable.

My grandfather was a Welsh coal miner in western PA; it’s not that uncommon is it?
