My personal take is that the flood resulted from a violent shift in the mid-Atlantic ridge in historic times, resulting in a massive tidal wave that swept across the continents. The movement created volcanic eruptions all around the tectonic plates and the ridge itself and caused prolonged rain storms across the world. Evidence for this is scattered across the globe.
