My personal opinion? The Muslim Brotherhood, who was in charge in Egypt at the time, was (and is) looking to free Omar Abdel-Rahman ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Omar_Abdel-Rahman ).
His name comes up often among terrorist looking to free him.
The “conspiracy” part is that if Ambassador Stevens had been grabbed, the U.S. would have exchanged him for Abdel-Rahman. The terrorists botched the kidnapping attempt and ended up killing the ambassador by accident.

The real operation was all those weapons.

The two Navy SEALs showing up at the compound disrupted the kidnapping attempt. They had no knowledge of this kidnapping attempt.
Mohammed Morsi's #1 CAMPAIGN PLEDGE TO EGYPT was getting the Blind Sheik released. This is a HUGE clue and often overlooked.
