I know of a case like this personally. The daughter is very intelligent, and extremely rebellious. She figured out - starting in seventh grade - that adults didn't have any real power over her, either in school or at home.

She became focused on demonstrating this in ways that escalated in severity. Before she entered high school, she had declared that she was a boy, and demanded to be accommodated as a male student.

I think the point - in her case - really has little or nothing to do with her sex, and mostly to do with rebellion, with exercising control over large numbers of people.
