While I am sure that most would opt to select .223/5.56 NATO over .22LR for home defense, but I have heard the argument that .22 would be better for home defense since its reduced energy would mean that it would penetrate through fewer walls. On the flip side, others argue that the 5.56 would be better as the round would tumble dissipating its energy and thus penetrate less.

The Mossad used Bereeta 70 in.22lr for decades
Neither. If you are worried about over-penetration (it’s a valid concern), go with a shotgun. VERY effective at close range but does not over-penetrate nearly as much (still can though).
Also, that sound of a shotgun shell being racked can literally scare the p### out of someone trying to break into your home. Been there, done that!
As noted in an earlier post, I’ve actually done the “KACHUNK” thing. After a few minutes, I walked outside and saw a puddle of urine on the ground just outside my front door.
Maybe doesn’t work for everyone, but worked for me...
If I still had a shotgun, I would load it with 00 and alternate it with #4 Buck. The house will just have to get repaired if we would have still been alive. But, since we don’t have the shotgun anymore, we will just call 911 and wait 20 minutes.
If you’re going to use an AR for home defense, don’t use FMJ ammo. Get some varmint ammo that will tend to disintegrate when it hits something.
Hmmm. I asked Mrs. rktman about over penetrtion and she just busted out laughing. I don’t get it. :)
On a really dark night I heard 2 perps walking on my deck slowly. I got my shotgun and snuck the long way around my house. When they heard me one turnedd and I could see his eyes! I leveled my shot gun and the perp then moooed.
> I believe .22lr leads the pack in murders in this country. Very deadly - never understood the mythology that it can be stopped by a heavy coat, etc.
You are correct. I remember in Vietnam going on a snatch and grab operation. They took our M16s away from us and issued .22LR pistols with silencers.
...From barrel end to invader. Im not talking at shooting at a blank wall for no reason. The guy would be between you and any wall...
At close range, #6 shot would go through someone at home defense range, make about a 4” hole, and keep on going right through drywall. The 2X4 studs will stop it. But, not the drywall attached to it.
#6 goes through flesh and bone at close range like it’s not even there.
LOL
It is my sincere hope that you never find out what your hit rate is in a close quarters gun fight.
Ribeyes for all?
Use a 223 with this ammo:

The mob used 22 also. They would empty it into your chest.
I did some reading and got converted to #1 Buck.
2.75", 12 #1 buck over, IIRC, 26 gr. WSF. Clock out around 1250 fps.
#1 is .300".
I think of it as trying to dodge 12 308 rounds at once.
Gives you a warm feeling.
No. It gives away your position. The weapon should already be chambered. If you can’t handle a hot weapon, get a sling shot.
Good choice with #4.
