I haven't found yet our usual FR Derby thread. I will start one, even though the race is a mere 5 hour away.
Oh, we lost too. We never like to bet on the “sure thing.” Nice race and pretty horses.
I would have been much happier if it had been 11-13. I had $5 on it so it paid $76.50.
The biggest exacta I ever hit paid $1147.00. I typically don’t bet exactas. I consider them to be sucker bets. I did this time because I went to the track just to bet the Derby. And like you said, if you box a few horses lots of time even if you win the pay out will be less than you bet.
When I say I bet $5 I actually boxed 3 horses so the bet cost me $60. I only made $16.60 net. But, as they say, it’s better than a kick in the .........teeth.
WPS is the way I usually go.
The biggest exacta bet I ever made was way back in ‘84 at Turf Paradise, when I lived in Scottsdale. Turf Paradise was then a track that didn’t have the somewhat respectable reputation it has now, and needless to say, that was before the days of simulcasting and money flowing into and through cyberspace from conceivably all over the world. I had a COLD $2 exacta on 6-1, Bobby Bald and Zora Foley. They went off at 30-1 and 10-1. It was a sloppy track and I watched the horses flinging mud all over as they entered the stretch, and saw the 6 surge ahead and the 1 close right behind him, making it a 6-1 exacta. I was overjoyed and figured I might have won 4 or 5 hundred for my $2 bet. I gasped when the odds board showed the payout -—$2131.00 !!! I guess I had the entire exacta pool. But that’s again because all the combinations hadn’t been covered by a multitude of other bettors-—basically just ONE, lucky ME at the track. At a major track, like Belmont, Santa Anita, or Churchill, even then the exacta would’ve paid $500 at the most, due to the volume of on-track betting at a heavily-attended racetrack. Way more recently, I pulled 4 numbers “out of a hat” for a Pick 4 at Los Alamitos. I just went by some jockeys I liked, and was careful NOT to bet all, or most favorites, mixing in some 5-1 and 6-1 Morning Line horses. I did this on my 4njbetsTVG.com online betting account. I kept checking back after each race on my laptop, and saw I had the right picks for the 1st 2nd 3rd, and then 4th! There were NO real longshots that won, and the fields are always short at Los Alamitos, so once again I figured I won about $500. Check my balance on my account and it paid $2692.00!!! The greatest game in the world. Although YES,I agree with you that the exacta bet IS sort of a sucker bet, and is very “over-used”. Check the stats online on equibase or drf.com, and you’ll see that exacta bets pool is usually DOUBLE the win pool bets. I am going to go back to verify this online with the stats for the Derby—I still say that $30.60 payout was a gift-—the exact equivalent of a $2 win bet on a 14-1 runner. No one can tell me that Nyquist over Exaggerator was a 14-1 bet!!
The night I won over $1,100 I think the lady told me I was the only one at the track that bet it. There was a small crowd that night.
Do you think Nyquist can make it back to back?
I think Stradivari or Exaggerator could beat him. But, for what it’s worth, I doubted American Pharaoh too. :>
