As much as Barry Goldwater.
Wikipedia says her father was also born in American Samoa, but became a naturalized U.S. citizen at age one.
I saw that, but don't know whether to believe it. The grandfather's name was Benjamin Harrison Gabbard, Jr. and you don't get much more American than that.
Quite a family: Mom from Indiana is a Hindu, Dad from Samoa is Catholic and very conservative for a Democrat, very much against gay marriage. He was originally a Republican but switched parties, probably because he wanted to get elected in Hawaii.
I remember the Goldwater issue. I thought Arizona might have had a different territorial status that might make a difference.
I don’t claim any expertise on the matter, and here is what Wikipedia also says: American Samoans are considered U.S. nationals, but may claim U.S. citizenship if one parent is a citizen. So I guess that covers her. I guess.
The issue has come up enough over the years that I wish we could get a settled definition.
