There are arguments about it on FR, but the conflicts over the Civil War are still with us today. The 14th amendment is constantly redefining what had been settled law*, and the economic animosities and power blocks started in that era, are still influencing the nation today.
The Roots of excessive Federal Dominance over the states started in 1861, and have only gotten worse ever since. If you look around at many of the current problems the nation is facing, you will find many of their roots lie in that Civil War, and from the manner in which it was resolved.

* Abortion, Banning Prayer in Schools, Anchor Babies, "Gay" Marriage, "Affirmative Action", and the meaning of "natural born citizen" are all examples of where the 14th amendment has been distorted to impact things which never had anything to do with it's intended purpose.
