A woman lost in an Arizona forest for nine days survived by drinking pond water, eating plants and spelling out help on the ground with sticks, authorities said Tuesday.
The sign helped lead rescuers to Ann Rodgers, 72, in the White Mountains of eastern Arizona earlier this month, the state Department of Public Safety said. Rodgers declined to comment when reached by The Associated Press.
However, Rodgers told a Tucson TV station on Tuesday that she had food and water in her car but ran out after several days and turned to survival mode.

The rule of 3’s:
3 minutes without air
3 hours with no shelter
3 days without water
3 weeks with no food
she wasn’t arrested for defacing nature?
Stix nix hick pix.
Guess you didn’t see a lot of Arizona, did you. The White Mountains are heavily forested — it is the world’s largest stand of Ponderosa pine. Lots of wild, remote, and rugged country there. Lived there in Pinetop in Winter ‘75 - ‘76. Lots of snow, too.
This is the second story where someone was saved by spelling out that word. I’ll have to remember it.
Where is that far side cartoon where the pilot only sees HELF and says nevermind.
Haha.. saw that recently... very funny!
Hmmm...Maybe she'll carry realy, really long extension cords in the future...
She'll probably get one of those power inverters, and plug it into the cigarette lighter.
It was borrowed time and she said why me....
OTOH, I wouldn't even think of getting into an electric "roller skate" for any reason...
I'd like to have one, just to make liberal's heads explode by taking it apart and using one of those nice variable speed electric motors to drive a gun lathe.
I googled: white mountains az
Lots of nice scenic forests and prairies and water.
My relatives picked the wrong spot to live at.
A friend of mine lives in Tucson and is out in the desert quite a bit. He has all sorts of water.
“Yeah - I haven’t ever needed to get into my emergency stash. Although I do give a lot to the illegals that I see that need it.
And then when I get back to cell phone coverage I speed dial the Border Patrol and give them the GPS coordinates.
Just because I want them caught doesn’t mean I can’t be Christian about it!”
The local article says the woman who left her vehicle claims she has taught survival classes in the past. I fear for her students if they ever get lost.
The photo at the site seems to show that HELP is only about 4’ x 2’ in size (compared to the elk skull).
I’m glad the pilots were that observant. Perhaps it was the elk rack that got their attention first.
“Hey Harry - look at that rack, maybe we shoot hunt here in the fall. Go take a closer look!”
“Oh hey, look at the “HELP” sign!”
It’s still among the prettiest places I’ve lived. I loved it up there (7,500 ft).
She was in the sticks but wrote ‘HELP’ WITH sticks.
Well, she’s stuck with her sticky story but, could branch out into other ventures and leave her story to be told, as a tall tale, about a woman with the strength of oak.
Just leave it to her to be so ingenius....
