We can't fall into the trap of blaming an officer or a department when thugs attack them alone.

No way am I blaming the officer or the department. But this was obviously an unsafe situation for a lone officer. I understand that such situations are often unavoidable.

Now, I'm just thinking out loud here. There are many retired police and military who are in their early 50's. The stress of their jobs earned them that early retirement.

But what about putting them on police forces (voluntarily, of course) as back-ups to regular officers, working maybe two days a week?

Great idea. The department I worked for had reserve officers as volunteers. Although many of them where younger, concerned citizens who wanted to make a difference, a few were close to retirement age.

My take is that a show of greater force (more officers) would have been denounced as "racist" by the #BlackLiesMatter cretins, with the help of Sharpton and Jackson, not to mention Obama.
