'We Should Protect All Life': Cruz's Consistent Pro-Life Stance Contrasts 'Bizarre' Trump Fits

MADISON, WISCONSIN—Calling Donald Trump's recent oscillations on abortion "bizarre," Ted Cruz laid out his own view on abortion in a Fox News town hall the day before Wisconsin's primary.

Over the past week, Donald Trump has oscillated between advocating "punishments" for mothers seeking abortions, and saying abortion should be kept legal. Cruz knocked Trump's "bizarre" statements. "It showed that he has not considered seriously this issue."

A self-described pro-choice moderate voter asked Cruz if his presidency would lead to outlawing abortion. "We should protect all life," Cruz said, arguing for the issue to be settled through the democratic process, as opposed to the current situation where federal courts have taken abortion largely out of the hands of elected legislators.

Roe v. Wade is not settled law, Cruz told Fox News' Megyn Kelly, but is a "classic case of judicial activism." Undoing Roe would return abortion to elected legislators and the state. In that case, Cruz said Monday, pro-lifers would need to persuade the country to join them in passing laws to protect the unborn.

As President, Cruz said, he would reinstitute the Mexico City agreement, which curbs U.S. foreign aide to overseas groups aborting babies or counseling abortion.

Fox News host Megyn Kelly asked Cruz on abortion in the case of rape, where most Americans are at odds with the pro-life position. After touting his prosecution of rapists, Cruz said, "as horrible as that crime is, I don't believe it's the child's fault."

Of Trump's call for punishing mothers seeking abortions, Cruz said: "These comments are the comments of a liberal who is saying what he thinks conservatives want to hear."

Cruz does not allow deported illegals to reenter the country. Cruz has a clear plan to destroy ISIS and Cruz’s tax plan and planned cuts of government agencies and regulations are solid steps to rebuilding the economy.

Sure...He's going to put all the retired people on the street and his Washington Cartel will reap the benefits...Cruz wants to kill off all the sick, homeless Veterans...

No, Cruz voted for fast track authority!

Then he changed his mind about the TPP.

That is why he is now against it, because Obama has put all kind of non-trade issues in it.

But Cruz voted for the Fast Track Authority to give Obama the ability to bypass the Senate amendment process and the required 60 votes.

So, get your facts straight, Cruz is for globalism.

Well, let's get your facts straight as well. Every president since Reagan has had Fast Track authority, so this was not some new and controversial legislation that was being passed. And TPA only bypasses the amendment and filibuster if the President follows the negotiating guidelines set out by Congress in TPA. If either House of Congress decides by a simple majority that the President violated those guidelines, then TPA goes out the window, and the normal amendment process and the filibuster come back into play.

Cruz voted against TPA. The bill that came back from the House did not have the immigration language that he and Sessions wanted. Also McConnell did some backroom dealing that Cruz objected to. He has NEVER been in favor of TPP. Once the final agreement came out, he said it violated U.S. immigration laws and our sovereignty.

Cruz voted for Fast Track which gave Obama authority to get TPA passed!

He voted against TPA after the damage had been done, which shows how naïve he is.

Cruz is a globalist and wanted Obama to have fast track authority so he wouldn’t have to deal with Congress!

Although Cruz didn’t vote for TPA, it has been around for 80 years. During that time only one President has not had it. Congress still has to approve or disapprove of the trade deals and they have input during the negotiations of those deals.

Fast Track takes away the ability of Congress to amend the deal.

And the fact that anyone would consider Obama just like any other President shows that Cruz really has no deep seated character problems with Obama.

Any true Conservative would.

Cruz has always said he didn’t trust Obama. The only reason he came out for TPA initially was because it will give TPA to the next President for 5 years, something that may not be possible if we lose the majority in the Senate.

No trade deal has been done in 80 years without TPA. Congress is required to be involved in the negotiations. No other country will agree to a trade agreement that can be changed by Congress. That is why they have to be involved in the process, rather than after the fact.
