Tesla Motors Inc.’s unveiling of its new electric vehicle yesterday had the marks of an iPhone release—long lines of enthusiastic consumers, a glossy product and a CEO presenting in a simple black shirt.
Little new information came out about the Model 3, but with the car’s comparably more affordable $35,000 price tag and 215-mile range, Tesla is making a bid to become a mass-market auto manufacturer.

I added a large commercial refrig and a commercial ice machine to my home awhile back and didn’t notice any change at all in my bill.
How can charging a battery that’s probably only been depleted 10% at most cost what you are saying?
And I honestly dont give a crap about coal powered plants. For me its the bottom line of will this save me money.

And I’m not sure where you got the impression that I think Tesla cars are “green”. I merely pointed out that you were wrong to assume that a customer was likely to receive a faulty pack in the (for all intents and purposes imaginary) battery swap program.
And of course, once again you spout an imaginary fact about the battery packs. The replacement cost has been clearly set by Tesla.
How much does it cost to replace a Tesla battery?
In the first 8 years, barring misuse or accident, replacement is FREE.
A separate battery replacement guarantee takes effect after the eighth year at a cost of US$10,000 for the 60 kWh battery and US$12,000 for the 85 kWh battery.
You are no doubt correct that the cost to produce that battery pack is currently larger than the amount Tesla will charge. However, the cost curve is downward, and real world customer experience indicates the batteries last far longer than anticipated during normal usage. Time will tell how much Tesla loses on battery replacements in the long run, but that’s really up to them and their shareholders to worry about, as they clearly defined the financial risk to the customer.
If you don’t want a Tesla, don’t buy one. I won’t be buying one myself, I just have a pet peeve with people who bad mouth companies that create American jobs using false information.

Thirdly, you talk as if there are no environmentalists in the world pattering a constant stream of propaganda about how evil fossil fuels are and then promoting electric cars as if electricity is somehow not related to fossil fuels. That was my only point.
That's not me. That's Tesla's claim as they were able to get their models listed as those available for the $7,500 federal income tax credit for clean energy vehicles. It's on their web site, if you want to check.
Bottom line is the rest of us are paying for those who utilize this scam.
We’re $.22 summer and $.37 winter. Fossil fuel is LP or oil, no NG no pipeline. We don’t need AC though.

There are a lot of advantages to an electric car. We have an almost unlimited amount of natural gas to use to produce electricity if we only would. I drive less than 20 miles back & forth to work, so that would last me ten days. I would be a little nervous about taking long road trips, but around town they would be good.
We spend more money subsidizing ethanol which costs more money and energy to produce than it produces. It also shortens the life of engines.
nd at the end of that 300 miles, it only takes me a few minutes to top off the tank, and I’m ready to go again.

Those alone represent four reactors for a total of over 4 GW of electricity generation... All expected to come online by 2020.

Also nonsense. The best solar cells are close to theoretical limitations, but discoveries making worthwhile solar cells much less expensive are still quite possible. There’s not a lot of downside in roofing your house with something that will defray your electricity costs by a lot if it’s inexpensive enough.
You remind me of those who said in times past “Man will never fly!” or “Space travel is impossible!”. The future holds great discoveries beyond your imagination.

They should be correctly referred to as coal and natural gas powered cars.
Why all the hostility towards this car? I see nothing wrong with advancing technology forward. Sure, the gas powered cars are more efficient today and likely better for the environment. But technology is always improving. So a range of 230 miles today could be 500 plus miles later. A charging time of hours today could be minutes eventually. Let the early adopters buy this car and give Tesla an opportunity to improve on future models.
What is not alright with me is subsidies, hidden or otherwise.
Anyway, you do make good points about early adopters promoting growth of a technology... as long as it is not subsidized.
