Dear Friends, Im looking to get some recommendations for English Language Arts Books that cover grades K-12 with good curriculum. Any input from Homeschooling/Teaching community in FR is greatly appreciated. Any feedback on Voyages In English would be great too. Thanks in advance. -Newb
I learned from textbooks published in the ‘50s and ‘60s, so I don’t think I can help much...
However, it would surprise me if any one product line were optimal from K all the way to 12. Once you get beyond grade 6, you probably have to shop around for the most suitable collection for your individual student.
My homeschooling was classics intensive, after the basics I was mostly fed from the Western canon; some students lean to science and if yours is one of those, an English lit and an American lit sampler may be a better choice than Milton and Melville. Short stories and plays rather than ponderous works, or hand picked abridged versions of the great works.
I could go on... :) Point is, there are no universal recipes, it depends on your student.
If your child is homeschooled, he’s already got an advantage.
ps: don’t overlook essays and logic!

If you have more questions, I'll have to put them to my wife as she is the expert. Feel free to message me.
Not really! Looks like a self teaching curriculum. Im looking for a curriculum with text book oriented approach. Not sure if this fits my needs. But will surely look into it for more details. Thank you very much!
I do agree that one series will not cater to the entire k-12 spectrum. I must say I dont like what I see that comes from schools( worksheet based learning) . If I may, what text books would you pick if you were to for k-7?
Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
Rod and staff are great for English as well as other subjects I have used r&s for 3 years now with both my daughters. But if you have a kiddo that just does not get it there is also Easy Grammar it starts at grade 2 and goes through 12. easy to understand, short lessons. great.
Thank you! Ill look into it.
Seems very comprehensive. Thank you! Have you used them? What would be the best place to buy these sets ?
Yes, I have used Rod and Staff. I loved it. Very solid and advanced by today’s standards. I have used ABeka as well. R&S is a no frills curriculum which I prefer over other publishers. Wish I still had my books as I would send them to you.
Thats so nice of you Hsmom, Thank you!
The other series that I heard of is Voyages In English.Do you know anything about this series?
I haven’t heard of the latter but I did find this link with regard to R&S. My kids are in college or graduated from college now so it’s been awhile since I homeschooled.

The samples are very convincing. Remind me of the way I learnt. Thanks for the links!
You are quite welcome. I loved R&S English and Math!
