Carpenters - We've Only Just Begun 1970
The Carpenters were not my cup of tea in high school, but it was impossible to ignore Karen’s lovely voice. The overdubbing of her voice, a trademark of Herb Alpert’s sound really made a difference.
She had a beautiful, rich singing voice.
Thanks for starting thread. I missed a lot of my new favs back in the days. Here are some more I play frequently:
Phaedra with Nancy Sinatra and the guy on a horse
The Last Farewell, Roger Whittaker
The End of the World, Skeeter Davis (one with long blonde hair and blue sweater)
Kiss Me Goodbye, Petula Clark, the with a closeup, bangs, sleveless black blouse
thanks. i just listened to four number one hits in the 70’s and i feel 100% better. i feel sorry for anyone who doesn’t love this music. as a musician, it’s just matchless. no one can touch them in what they did.
Another of Burt’s many, many hits was “You’ll Never Get To Heaven If You Break My Heart”. Today, his manager might say
“Can you take the word “Heaven” out of it, Burt?”
He probably would have refused.
There was room for both rough and beautiful songs back then.
I’m thinking of David Gates and Bread; “I’d like to make it with you”. So gentle, and melodic. There is probably a good market for that today, but most music producers don’t want to risk losing a few hundred thousand in the investment. Plus, unless the group is ready to tour, it’s hard to make money from songs alone. The songs might be gobbled up and dispersed for free via sites like Spotify.
A truly lovely voice unlike the screeches of today.
Do you find yourself to always be in a somber mood?
Rainy Days And Mondays;)
Phaedra was from the song ‘Some Velvet Morning’ by Lee Hazelwood. It was one of the most unusual songs released during that decade. To hear the by now familiar voice of Nancy Sinatra singing a duet about a mythologic character was surprising. Some would call it part of the psychedelic era.
It almost sounded like two separate songs loosely stitched together by way of a slowing tempo leading to a bridge.
I know.
When I read depressing stuff, yes.
That’s a funny story. How often we cannot predict outcomes.
I also enjoy watching Britain's Got Talent. Today I woke up with the Elaine Paige and Susan Boyel duet with the stairway and candles running in my head, the melody. I always have to have a good melody.
Jackie Evancho, Paul Potts, Susan Boyle.
I have quite a few cd's but enjoy youtube more, sound isn't as good, but enjoy the visuals.
“Muskrat fun! Muskrat fun for everyone! Paw dipping! Flat tail stuff!”
;^)
Here is something old and new, and surprising.
Word around the campfire was that John Wayne wanted her to be in True Grit in the role Kim Darby played. And that Elvis Presley was highly considered for the role Glen Campbell played. TG would have been a totally different movie had that happened.
Jackie Evancho is supremely gifted. I really hope her family and or manager figures out how to give Jackie enough opportunity to be what she really is right now, which is a child. Hopefully there are a few months out of the year where she is off the road, and having nice, slow, boring weekends like others do. She seems to quite enjoy performing, though.
There is a market today for the type of music you described, but you have to go to Korea to hear it.
KBS World TV is a Korean broadcasting network that features live performances of popular Korean singers on the show “Immortal Songs2”. This is not what’s known as K-Pop, it’s more along the lines of “standards” and similar in genre to what The Carpenters did.
Although the language is Korean, the music is very Western feeling and not unfamiliar like Chinese or Japanese music.
The 2 ladies performing in the link below are the duo “Davichi”. Although they’ve performed many times on the show, the first link is to “Do You Know” and is subtitled.
The second is “The Maze of Love”.
IMO,this is truly singing, not screeching.
