In 17th century Virginia only one out of seven indentured servants survived to the end of his term of indenture. From the minute they stepped off the boat they were worth more dead than alive. Those servants were English.

There was also a particularly evil group of entrepreneurs in England at the time known as "crimps" who specialized in stealing children and exporting them to the colonies as servants.

Heck the most everyone in Jamestown had a terrible life expectancy. Not just the servants.
