Sad to see Weigel and George spreading this year’s BIG LIE: That Trump is a fascist who will abolish the Constitution.
There’s nothing in Trump’s history that suggests that this is true.
Weigel was a cheerleader for the Iraq war, promising in the pages of First Things that it would lance the boil of Islamic radicalism (or cure the fever, or some such analogy). in other words, he favored aggressive war based on sociological speculation. Even though the pope - whom Weigel famously claimed to champion - opposed our invasion, by some reports saying (in curiously untranslated statements), that it was flat-out unjust.
You might think that, with such a disastrous miscalculation to atone for, Weigel would retire from the public stage, at least for a season, for a time of reflection and mortification. Instead, he’s still riding his high horse, issuing smug pontifications, this time against Trump - without even a passing acknowledgement that Trump was right about the war when Weigel was so woefully wrong.
