I think it was because folks had more kids then than today. Thus, they could afford to lose a few. My grandmother was one of 16, Only 12 made it to adulthood.

Yes, and this is exactly what the islamic muslims want to see happen in all of the European and Scandanavian cities....and, here in our USA. ( eventually, leading to islamic muslims determining all of the winners in all of our elections down the road )---and unfortunately, there is no rebutal to this.)
The muslims are out-producing -everyone, everywhere- eight to one!!
