Word For The Day, Monday, 2/29/16
In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
calumniate; verb
1. to make false and malicious statements about; slander.
Etymology: 1545-55; < Latin calumniātus (past participle of calumniārī to accuse falsely, trick), equivalent to calumni (a) calumny + -ātus -ate1
Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.
Practice makes perfect.....post on....
Me too.
Tough guy is good or bad depending on context. Trump has clowned it up, and it’s gotten him some fans, but it’s also got him some bitter enemies. It can’t be kept up like pointless gladiatorism forever. It has to gain a moral.
And I’m kind of sensitive to the issue, because I’ve seen tough guy done wrong in my own family past, and believe you me, there’s few things more alienating than this.
i can see where toughness appeals, conservatives HUNGER for it,and rightfully so. but the nastiness, the stupidity of much of what he says, and again, the lack of foundational principles to underpin what he says he will do, all give more than enough reason to pause and question and indeed LOOK ELSEWHERE. i see no hope. it’s a trainwreck.
This business will get out of control. It will get out of control and we'll be lucky to live through it.
Well, he’s come up with an implied foundational principle of populism, i.e. toss it up to the American people in general to tell him what ought to make America great.
This has caused him to empirically move rightward. The biggest “liberalism” problem in America isn’t even the people. It’s the government, which gains by being nominated nanny of ever more things.
not 21st?
Not really sure if it is even possible to make caluminates (false of exaggerated claims) about the evils of today’s caliphates.
Every time you think the barrier for uncivilized, barbaric, medieval sadism is reached, today’s Muslims go several steps further towards mid-evil cruelty.
Mid-evil? I say max-evil
i think that populism will conveniently be forgotten once he’s no longer looking for votes, then what will he revert to? trump voters are taking so much on faith, directed towards a man who has exhibited so little faithfulness in his own life.
ITA! and i am certain we don’t have nearly enough weaponry or ammo for the coming days!
excellent Robt A++++ every once in awhile you come up with a truly excellent piece of homework!
True, Trump might forget who buttered his bread.
But this is a problem with all politicians.
understood. but these concerns are what underlie the opposition to trump. you cannot deny the messiah-like adulation he receives from those who support him, and it is based on nothing more than faith in a man who has precious little to demonstrate that he’s worthy of it.
And when it comes to finances, many people make much of his four chapter 11 business filings (a loan restructure, which is not tantamount to a personal bankruptcy — the debtors still get paid back, but on a longer schedule). But they forget that this represents a single digit percentage of his total business transactions, in which others he delivered as promised.
Trump may be agonizing to watch, but I don’t think he’s going to muff the financial side of things.
No, it's the people. They have no concept of what makes America great.
The Obama voters wanting their mortgages paid were something to laugh at.
Now we have our own band of cultists on the "right" looking for a magic man to make the world change back to the 1950s.
my primary concern in the judiciary and i have ZERO reason to believe that he will do the right thing there. his PP stance for example makes me question his commitment to life, which is a personal red button issue of mine.
The tariffs with Mexico and China are going to make our economy just fabulous, I am sure.
And he is demagoging on entitlement reform, which will cause them to devour more and more of the budget.
Instead of leadership, a sweet talker, telling people all is fine.
That's what Al Gore did on the subject. Should make you think twice.
wastefraudandabuse!
Well what little I’ve followed there, has him saying (1) he was just kidding about his sister; (2) he likes Thomases; (3) he wants to see Roe v. Wade revised.
Now anyone can say anything, but I think he picks up on the fact that abortion to the degree that is currently “legal” is in favor with considerably less than 50% of the American people.
