For the record I happen to agree with Apple on unlocking these phones. With that being said, there is a lot of pressure for Apple to do just that. So I propose a Compromise:
Go Ahead and produce an update that UNLOCKS this Phone, but in so doing make the Update MANDATORY FOR ALL IPHONES, Make the update automatically DOWNLOAD ALL INFO from EVERY IPHONE to a Public Website for ALL AMERICANS to see. Then listen to the Government Cry because ALL INFO from Every Government Employee with an Iphone is NOW PUBLIC! Why would they complain anyway, if they have NOTHING to HIDE, they have NOTHING to worry about right? That is what the Police and Government Agents always say isn't it? Then go ahead and make the update and PUBLISH ALL INFO FROM EVERY IPHONE, they are Begging you to do this, in fact they are trying to FORCE YOU TO DO EXACTLY THIS! GIVE THEM WHAT THEY WANT in SPADES!!!
This is what they want right?
Correction:
NSA does NOT is not supposed to have content, only meta-data.
You actually trust this administration to follow the law?
How very quaint.
Yet, somewhere, the government has the data it seeks but will not admit to it, lest a myth it has foisted upon us all be burst. Since at least 2009, the government's domestic spies have captured the metadata -- the time, place, telephone numbers and duration of all telephone calls -- as well as the content of telephone calls made in America under a perverse interpretation of the FISA statute and the Patriot Act, which a federal appeals court has since invalidated.
The DoJ knows where this data on this killer's cellphone can be found, but if it subpoenas the NSA, and the NSA complies with that subpoena, and all this becomes public, that will put the lie to the government's incredible denials that it spies upon all of us all the time. Surely it was spying on the San Bernardino killers.
It seems the only folks who disagree with Apple are the ones who haven’t read Tim Cook’s public letter about it.
Also, what many seem to forget is that the fedgov was wanting this technology BEFORE San Bernadino happened.
If following leads to catch the Tangos of San Bernadino is so important:
a) Why let the media traipse through the home of the perps, handling evidence, etc?
b) Why is there a continuing policy of letting these types into the country?
c) Why isn’t everyone at the Islamic military safe house (aka mosque) under investigation?

uh...no...I understand the process and the capabilities.
You think they follow 300 million bedtime stories?
My dumb question since I’m not an iphone user, Do iphones automatically update when apple updates it’s OS etc?
It is not Apples job to make the job of the FBI easier.
What is on the killer’s phone that is not available from provider’s phone records (numbers, time duration), GPS tracking records (location over time), emails (archiving) from internet providers???? NSA is supposed track terrorists!?!
All that can be acquired without having the physical phone.
It all looks like another version of going after the gun ban after random killing.
What is left of citizen’s privacy ???
You already pay for your phone that gives the almighty government free access to your private activity.
Yeah, freedom for terrorists, spying on citizens!
Not really.
If you all go to Rush Limbaugh’s website, you will find his explanation of what is REALLY going on; and it’s not about privacy vs. terrorism.
When you purchase an iPhone (or any smart phone), you should find out how to set up your phone. The Fed office where the terrorists worked did not do that. They issued the phone without setting the MDM software. Setting this software is not Apple’s job. It’s the job of the PERSON WHO OWNS THE PHONE. The Fed office was the owner of the phone, but they never did anything about protecting their property - the phone was messed with by the USER (the terrorists), not the owner.
Companies who purchase this type of phone for their employees should hire a very smart IT person and have them set up the phone for THE COMPANY’S CONTROL. This was never done - and the phone was just given to the terrorists, not knowing what they were doing with it. THIS IS NOT A GOOD PLAN. Employers should always maintain control over ANY COMPANY PHONE.
So, I’m supporting Apple .. because they provided a way for the owner of the phone to protect it .. and the owner didn’t do that .. and now they’re whining because they can’t get control. Hmmmmmm? Ignorance - isn’t a good excuse.
Actually, the Sheriff’s Office for the San Bernardino area has plenty of terrorist activity information (over near Palm Desert is a Terrorist Training camp; and they already have a death related to terrorists); so why isn’t the FBI checking with them, instead of harassing Apple?
I think they record 300 million bedtime stories, and whenever a peasant sticks his head up too high they have the ability to listen very carefully to his bedtime stories. Very carefully indeed.
Do you think with the progress being made in computing and data crunching it will be impossible to listen to 300 million or even 600 million bedtime stories in 20 years?
Are you delighted to leave that world to your kids?
Slay this beast now, now, now.
“I think they record 300 million bedtime stories”
No!
They don’t!
Go read one of the many authoritative sources that discuss what they actually do.
You’ll be surprised how much it saves on your tin foil budget.
