Word For The Day, Thursday, 2/18/16
In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
alacrity; noun
1.
cheerful readiness, promptness, or willingness: We accepted the invitation with alacrity.
2.
liveliness; briskness
Etymology: n.
mid-15c., from Latin alacritatem (nominative alacritas) "liveliness, ardor, eagerness," from alacer (genitive alacris) "cheerful, brisk, lively;" of uncertain origin, perhaps cognate with Gothic aljan "zeal," Old English ellen "courage, zeal, strength," Old High German ellian.
Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.
Practice makes perfect.....post on....
I think its fine to discuss our differences of opinion. I am not looking to sway anyone and nothing anyone says in here or elsewhere is going to sway me. We see and weigh things differently. Maybe bc I am a lawyer and arguing is what I do for a living, I don’t take it personally and don’t intend to give offense. I will NOT engage on the ridiculous threads where the cruzbots and trumpbots threaten murder and mayhem when their candidate is attacked. you’d swear that criticism of cruz or trump was like you insulting their FAMILY.
Oh, I commented to you up thread, but with the confidence that we are friends and can say something once in awhile. I will bite my tongue and vote for the nominee in the general, but in the primary I dare to dream.
I think we have united that Jeb is the worst of the candidates. Too bad the Dems want another go ‘round with a Clinton. Dems always were foolish idiots.
But he seemed quite pleased to hear that Trump had called him a 'political' figure, noting that Aristotle had described the human being as a 'political animal.' 'Thank God he said I was a politician because Aristotle defined the human person as 'animal politicus'. So at least I am a human person.' Discussion is great. I know it’s unlikely in this room that it devolves into crap we see in the general threads. Those are quite entertaining. It’s awfully easy to yank someone’s chains and watch them wig out.
I fear the open threads these day like I do the religious threads. I don’t go there without getting bitten, so I stay away.
At Bible study last night, a new one I joined at my church here in town, I learned that we have some mighty fine Christians in just those 10 folks around that table. I so enjoyed our discussion. It was refreshing. We are the church, not some clueless Pope at the Vatican.
I don’t enjoy it, they are all insane IMO!!!
the barking is hilarious. we heard it on the way back from the funeral in PA the first time and i wondered how my dogs would react. last night there was a replay of it, and the dogs were down for the night, sleeping in the laundry room, and Julius heard that barking and went off barking himself, I LMAO. she was authentic!
and that is all that really matters, at the end of the day.
A+++ she is so colorful!
Not really. Trump just questioned Scalia’s view that many black students might do better at less prestigious colleges.
I questioned that as well. However, it is a more complicated issue than it seems at first glance, because of “affirmative action” bringing in unqualified blacks and displacing more qualified whites. Trump, however, wonders whether it is time to get rid of “affirmative action”, anyway.
Liberals, blacks, and “global warming” fanatics are having a field day over on Twitter bashing Scalia. The latter are the most odious—they absolutely HAVE TO put in their programs to lower us to Third World status, and NOTHING most get in their way!!!!
As for African-Americans, they may find out that obama has set them back 50 years—glorifying the Black Panther Party (as does PBS) and setting up a new terrorist group—”Black Lives Matter” to take its place.
When he met with Patriarch Kirill, he should have started to become Orthodox and take his flock with him. That’s just my opinion. for what it’s worth. But it may have eventually taken away Pope Francis’ rough edges!
Just watched a bit of news-Fox was showing Josh Earnest stumbling unhappily over Obama’s schedule and the Scalia funeral...
Obama’s nastiness and pouting
Is displayed for us once more-
Refusing to honor an opponent
Besides-he’s done this before
Josh Earnest is-almost-pitied
For delivering the daily news
With no alacrity for the task
I’d hate to be in those shoes
Since all this is right out there
Hillary should watch her mouth-
Many are tired of mafia tactics
Especially in the west and south...
Iâm especially concerned this presidential election year because there seems to be a movement to abandon or compromise pro-life principles, especially in the historically pro-life party, the Republican Party. I wonât go into my personal opinions of the various candidates, but I will point out that Donald Trump, the current leader in the race for that partyâs presidential nomination, is only a recent convert away from an apparently strong pro-abortion position, and that his current commitment to a pro-life position seems rather ambiguous. Even more troubling to me is that his supporters seem to be focusing on some of the issues listed above, especially the economy, immigration and terrorism, and ignoring his commitment to life. If elected, will he appoint officials to his administration, at all levels, who will defend life, the most basic human right? Will he appoint judges who defend life (not to mention traditional marriage and family), especially after he told a reporter in August that his sister, Judge Maryanne Trump Barry, who is a Judge of the United States 3rd Circuit Court of Appeals, would be a âphenomenalâ Supreme Court justice. The only problem is, Judge Barry is a notorious pro-abortion judge, once issuing a ruling strongly in favor of the right to infanticide, partial birth abortion. Maybe this was just a brother praising his sister, and maybe this was just another example of Trump speaking without thinking it through. But⦠My point is not to criticize Mr. Trump, or to oppose or support his nomination. Nor is it to pass judgment on the depth of his pro-life convictionsâpeople convert, people change. Nor is it my point to oppose or support any candidate or political party. My point is that Americans are clearly understandably concerned about many important issues, and may be losing sight of one key and uncompromisable issue: the right to life. And so we March on Friday. To defend and proclaim the dignity of human life, and to make it clear to politicians, to our neighbors, to each other and to ourselves, that the culture of life must be restored to our nation, or our nation will collapse. And that no issue on the political landscape âtrumpsâ the need to protect the right to life. And that protecting that right must be an uncompromised priority whenever we elect our representatives in government, from president to school board member
A++++ great job! It cannot be fun to have to go behind Obama with a shovel, cleaning up his crap.
I saw that-I just hope the Dean scream is imminent...
I think those of us at WFTD are reasonably pragmatic-we live in the real world. I have a preference for Cruz and his more libertarian views of freedom and government slashing, and I like Trump’s f***-you-and-the-horse-you-rode-on attitude, too. Rubio comes across as being softer in his approach, and I do like him-but I don’t see him as the type to kick ass and take names, like Cruz and Trump do, unfortunately.
I will vote for the nominee, but like anyone, I do have my preferences...
I’ve already gnashed my teeth over pope Francis’ stepping into secular matters like politics-again-on a couple of threads-I’m actually starting to think he is apostate-wouldn’t be the first pope in history who was...
