Wouldn't a well-placed bullet have been cheaper?

I find new-born colts ("baby horses?!") as cute as the next fellow, but unless it was someone's pet, why go to that much effort?

My feelings exactly, and was going to post similar before I read your post.

No one has claimed ownership, and the taxpayers/donors have to pay a huge vet bill.

In a saner world, the poor critter would have just been put out of it’s misery, just like unwanted animals at a shelter. Only since this one was suffering, it would have been more merciful.
