LBJ invited the leading Republican senator (whose name escapes me) to the Whitehouse and asked him what it would take to get his support for the Great Society program. The senator pulled out a list and handed it to LBJ. It contained a list of committee chairmanships and other items. LBJ looked at it and said, done.
