Apparently in the case of Michael Douglas, years of heavy drinking and smoking had nothing to do with getting oral cancer.

Perhaps because the adult beverage industry is so powerful the following CDC findings decades ago will never be shared openly with the public at large:

Alcoholic beverages (and heavy consumption of carbonated beverages) reduce the mucosa shield in the mouth and throat, and smokers who smoke while drinking are many times more susceptible to the harmful effects of the carcinogens in tobacco smoke. This same principle of reduced mucosal protection is likely a contributor to increased HPV infections of the mouth and throat.
