I may be mistaken on this, but I was under the impression that it was a subscription-based feature. You don’t subscribe, you don’t have that feature.

DeLorme inReach is subscription but it is very affordable. About a two thirds of the way down the page is pricing:

SPOT is also subscription.

Yes - subscription ... I just meant that if I was going into any territory or place where I thought there was a chance of getting stranded out of cell range ... I'd prepare in advance to have one and have the subscription turned on. I'm not in situations where I'd need it. But - didn't mean to suggest there's just a button on the GPS that comes free for use at any time with the GPS.

If, however, I were to go driving into Death Valley, and had not grown up there or knew the area ... 'be prepared' would dictate having it.
