Search on lu motto, “Ad utrumque, ‘prepared for both’, is Lund University’s motto, referring to the book and the sword in the University’s seal from the 17th century.”

Well, utrumque is definitely "both," but ad can be translated different ways in English depending on the context. This was during the era when Sweden was a military power ("punching above its weight" as BHO would say). Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden was a major figure in the Thirty Years War and Sweden remained strong into the 1700s.
