The Pentagon is funding research to develop a microchip that not only promises brain-like artificial intelligence, it is small enough to fit inside a wide range of mobile devices.
Known as 'Eyeriss', the palm-sized processor has a staggering 168 cores and is based on 'neural networks' that are modelled on the human brain.
By comparison, processing chips used in a wide variety of smartphones typically have quad cores.
This technology could make its way onto the battlefield in the form of drones or robots that could conduct their own learning in real-time, without the need for human analysis.
...
Researchers at MIT said Eyeriss is 10 times as efficient as a mobile GPU, so it could also enable mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets to run powerful artificial-intelligence algorithms locally, rather than having to upload data to the cloud for processing.
This would help to speed up apps because the chip has its own memory, and keep the amount of work to a minimum, meaning your future handset wouldn't rely so heavily on the internet.
'Deep learning is useful for many applications, such as object recognition, speech, face detection,' said Vivienne Sze, a professor at MIT's department of electrical engineering and computer science whose group developed the new chip.
'Right now, the networks are pretty complex and are mostly run on high-power GPUs.
'You can imagine that if you can bring that functionality to your cell phone, you could still operate even if you don't have a Wi-Fi connection.'

Placed into mass production, drones with these chips, infrared sensors, laser guidance, and linked by network with stand-off weapons systems, will make it impossible for any human to survive for long above ground.
We better give these things a sense of humor so they keep us around for their amusement.
I’ve thought for a while this is how they’ll ‘police’ the no human zones on the agenda 21 map.
Like the Rush song:

One of my favorite Rush songs.
Sarah Connor: Reese. Why me? Why does it want me?
Kyle Reese: There was a nuclear war. A few years from now, all this, this whole place, everything, it’s gone. Just gone. There were survivors. Here, there. Nobody even knew who started it. It was the machines, Sarah.
Sarah Connor: I don’t understand.
Kyle Reese: Defense network computers. New... powerful... hooked into everything, trusted to run it all. They say it got smart, a new order of intelligence. Then it saw all people as a threat, not just the ones on the other side. Decided our fate in a microsecond: extermination.
Nothing will happen without a go code from Valerie Jarrett, so the ragheads have nothing to worry about
wow
Very cool. Kinda scary.
But the killer drones which will be the problem will be the ones at altitude, beyond the reach of small arms, and basically impossible to see.
There will be swarms of very small, quiet “spy drones” whose mission is to identify targets and light them with lasers. The larger stand off weapons platform drones will then take them out with guided munitions or long-range direct shots. A smaller number of very large drones could carry sizeable missiles for destruction of larger targets.
Given a sufficient stream of munitions, a network of two or three very large drone weapons platforms with 20 mid-size direct fire drones, all supporting about two or three hundred spy drones could conceivably exterminate all humans in a 20 square mile area in a day.
Which seems, increasingly, to be the whole point of this particular line of research.
Drones seem to be the perfect behind-the-lines weapon.
Use them behind enemy lines.
Looks that way to me, too. A great way to rid the earth of its “excess population.”
Oh, I forgot one other thing. The drones will be programmed to ignore targeting a certain class of transponders emitting a “no-kill” code. Anyone possessing such a transponder is immune from “droning.”
In order to survive, you need to be one of the “right people” and be issued one of those things. I would advise keeping the batteries charged in it at all times.
And who are the “enemy?”
Drones with brains? Could we replace 90% of our guberment with them? It would be an improvement.
This will end well...\...........
Not likely. The Pentagon these days can hold onto a secret from 3-5 years. Then the Chinese get it.
Since the drones are behind enemy lines everyone and everything is the enemy.
Jesus Christ save me. This is clearly Satan’s time.
It’s a little hard to disguise. They just can’t help bitching about so many of the REST of us all the time. It’s almost the only thing they talk about anymore and the need to ‘do something’ about OUR sheer numbers.
