It's no surprise that all 44 presidents were born on U.S. soil: The requirement for a president to be a "natural born citizen" is enshrined in the U.S. Constitution. The current debate about what that means stems from the fact that there's no document trail to reveal what, exactly, the Constitution writers meant by that statement.
Whatever your opinion may be, it is true that all of the presidents to date have been born in one of the 50 U.S. states. Live Science took a look at where the presidents were born. While the tally may have a lot to do with chance, the overall trends do reflect changes in the population, politics and attitudes of Americans over the years. Nothing to see here people, move along.
Americans seem to be quite willing to accept a lot of BS when it serves their needs.
Wasn’t there evidence that Chester Arthur was born in Canada? Also, what about the Kenyan-born current occupant of the WH?
Cruz wants to be the first Hispanic or Cuban or Canadian US president. And the people yawn.
They both felt the need to hide and deny their foreign births... for some reason.
I will know him as the first openly foreign born President. The rest is irrelevant.
“Wasnât there evidence that Chester Arthur was born in Canada? Also, what about the Kenyan-born current occupant of the WH?”
Chester Arthur was born in the United States with British parents, British citizenship, and no U.S. citizenship of any kind. His mother was a natural born citizen of the United States, but she lost her U.S. citizenship when she married her British citizen husband in Quebec, Canada. Consequently, her son was born in the United States without U.S. citizenship.
There are some that believe that Chester Arthur was born in Canada, not Vermont.
if we accept the common law understanding of natural born citizen, he was a natural born US citizen by virtue of having been born on US Soil however.
Chester Arthur was born in US. His controversy is that he lied about his age to make his date of birth after his father was naturalized. He was Natural Born by deceit.
I’m aware. But that is not the history that was recorded and, even if he was, he had the good sense to hide the fact and represented himself as a US citizen.
he was natural born by virtue of being born into the allegiance of the United States.
sorry folks, lots wrong here.
POTUS birth is one thing.
“Candidate’s” birth is relevant too.
just a few recent items:
McCain born in Canal Zone, NOT “US Soil”
Romney’s Dad born in Mexico.
No evidence of Obambis’ birth place produced anywhere, nor documented by anything.
Cruz born in Canada
Rubio, greencard parents not citizens
Jindal parents on student visa’s.
Remember the issue with Goldwater?
Born in Arizona territory before it was a state.
The Donald?
Born in Queens from two citizens parents.
That one meets the requirement.
why does Hussein Obama’s name have an asterisk on that map???
The common law allows for exceptions to the Jus Soli principle. McCain was still born into the jurisdiction and allegiance of the US. Anyone with even a basic understanding of the the common law understanding of NBC would know that he was a NBC. George Romney was not a NBC. I agree with you there. Goldwater was born in the Arizona territory which was fully subject to US jurisdiction. Goldwater was born into US allegiance and was a NBC. Donald was born on US soil. Obviously a NBC. Rubio is questionable as well. It could go either way there. The common law would make him a NBC however regardless of his parents’ status.
“if we accept the common law understanding of natural born citizen, he was a natural born US citizen by virtue of having been born on US Soil however.”
No, that is an entirely false statement. At the time when Chester Arthur was born in the United States, a child born in the United States did not acquire U.S. citizenship when the parents were alien citizens. The acquisition of U.S. citizenship by birth on U.S. soil was not adopted until later in the 19th Century when the enactment of Federal naturalization laws for such births within the jurisdiction of the United States came into effect. Prior to that time, some states granted naturalized citizenship to the children of foreign citizens, but not for Chester Arthur and not natural born citizenship, only naturalized citizenship in other states and in other historical periods.
You’re probably right. I’ll tell you who would really want to take him to court over this, Hispanics. A ruling against Cruz would affirm that all of those anchor babies are NBCs of the United States-Marco Rubio included.
That is not correct.
There were 8 presidents (Washington, John Adams, Jefferson, Madison, Monroe, John Quincy Adams, Jackson and Harrison) who were not born on U.S. soil.
But the Constitution did allow for that.
