There's a truism amongst fighter pilots: you can't fake it at 500 knots and enemy fire all around. One's real character emerges.
That's what's happening as the presidential race has begun. Real results - not polls - are now being felt, and Donald Trump, who beat his chest as the inevitable victor in the polls, is revealing his true character - as is Ted Cruz, who surprisingly bested him in the first live battle, the Iowa caucuses.
As the caucuses commenced, Cruz was accused of maliciously reporting that candidate Ben Carson was dropping out of the race. That would help Cruz, it was theorized, since Carson voters presumably might go to Cruz.
What actually happened, is that Carson revealed he was going home after Iowa and not on to New Hampshire, where the next vote will be held and where most expected him to go. CNN reported this with hints that it was strange. Why wouldn't he be going to New Hampshire? Was he dropping out?
Unnamed (so far) elements of Cruz's campaign then, as the caucuses were being conducted and votes being tallied, tweeted basically the same. When Carson, after the election, found this out, he cried foul. Cruz, who all evidence so far indicates had no personal knowledge of his campaign's tactic, nevertheless immediately apologized. Carson eventually blamed CNN, although he was not happy with anyone involved. Details of the matter are still to be revealed.
But Trump, a smart man and certainly aware of these basics - and after a gracious acknowledgement of Cruz's victory - the next day reversed and charged that Cruz had lied to get votes. He is now demanding a new Iowa election.
Trump has been rude and blustery but not, at least in public during this race, a sore loser.

I don’t know about you, but one foreign born pres is enough for me. Do we really want a guy from a family of Cubans from Canada as POTUS? I want an AMERICAN.
And what about this?
If current trend holds, the number of Cubans seeking entry through Laredo will be about 24,700 this fiscal year. That’s about 60 percent more than 2014âs 15,600 and nearly twice as many as 2013’s 12,445.
The influx of Cubans to Texas is a result of the Obama administration’s efforts to normalize relations with the communist Castro regime, said Marc Rosenblum, deputy director of the U.S. Immigration Policy program at the Migration Policy Institute, a Washington-based think tank.
Obama’s Ordering the border guards to stand down and let illegals in from S America and Cuba assures Democratic vote to keep them in power from now on- not to mention the billions of dollars it cost to take care of them.
I’m sure most Cubans are good people, but we need to take care of our own first. Our elders and veterans, to name just a few, are suffering. Our hiways and bridges are falling apart.
We are 19 Trillion dollars in debt.
We cannot take care of the whole world.
How does Cruz feel about THIS?
Thinker? This isn,t thought. It’s scurrilous drivel.
...time will tell....
..the trumpster is a twit...
I think 6 o’clock another poll comes out so you are correct.
THERE YOU GO AGAIN .. ROTFLOL
What? You called me a liar and I pushed back. I would imagine you would too if I called you one.
No proof of that. Carson got about what he was expected to get.Trump didn’t - am I to believe that that was because word about Carson was put out by CNN, and picked up by Cruz - and Rubio - staffers?
CNN had to get that info about Carson’s itinerary from somewhere, and no one has suggested that it came from Cruz.
BTW, Carson did go home, and he is not in NH. Would anyone care to mention a precedent of a legit candidate not going to NH after IA, because he needed a change of clothes??? What is up with THAT?
“... I pushed back”
Well bully for you .. were you expecting me to change my complaint about your lie ..???????
Like I said, get over yourself ..!!!!
Are we still talking about the sister? Good Lord......Trump is very good and will be President if we have a sane country.
“Cruz cheated!” Trump: “I was framed I tell ya!”
No, New Hampshire is a bastion of conservative political thought, which is why they elect senators like Kelly Ayotte (F/33%), Jean Shaheen (F/2%) and congress “persons” like Frank Guinta (D/69%) and Ann McLane Kuster (F/7%). Not to mention that Bernie Sanders is leading with 58% going into the primary.
HA! First Brian Boitano now that.
Stan, is that you?
I wasn’t talking about ANY sister .. so have a good time.
Good bye
Good riddance.
Cruz wants to limit the levels of legal immigration while dealing with illegal immigration. He acknowledges that the current levels of legal immigration are unsustainable, that our infrastructure and services cannot support it.
Cruz is the only candidate I’ve seen who has a plan to cut several federal agencies and to gut government programs and subsidies that are costing billions.
As for Cruz being born in Canada, it isn’t like he had a choice. He has lived in this country from the age of four and by the age of 13 knew the Constitution by heart. He has defended that Constitution his entire adult life. I don’t see how anyone can question his patriotism.
Under pressure, Cruz showed his willingness to dupe voters with a lie. Just as he did to us with TPP and fast track. He also demonstrated his willingness to intimidate people with that “voting violation” notice. Normal people out here got a notice with big red letters saying “Voting Violation” and making sure their neighbors knew if they voted or not. Then made sure they know their neighbors will get a post election follow up about him.
Pressure showed him to be a person with very little common sense or respect for others. I would prefer him to Hillary, but that’s about all I can say in his favor.
