Oddly, if you refer to yourself as a 'stupid gringo', many Panamanians 1) become sort of buddy-buddy immediately, and 2) they help out enormously with your Spanish, correcting obvious errors and so forth. DAMN useful!

Mi abuelo trabajó en Panamá hace muchos años -- My grandfather worked in Panama many years ago.

See, even us stupid gringos learn a bit...(g!) Unfortunately, I haven't learned yet how to make special characters appear normal on FR, sorry. The first is supposed to be an accented o, the second an accented a, and the third the Spanish letter 'enye', or n with a tilde.
