DENVER (CBS4)- The number of concussions in the NFL has hit a five-year high. The League says there have been 271 concussions this season. That's up 31 percent from last season.

The numbers come as the blockbuster movie "Concussion" hits theaters and as the U.S. Congress launches an investigation into head injuries.

Congresswoman Diana DeGette, a Democrat representing Denver, sits on the Oversight and Investigations subcommittee that will conduct the probe.

Could it be because they are scrutinizing all the hits so closely now? Lots of concussions never diagnosed before. I honestly think helmets need to get redesigned and not have that had she’ll and steel face masks. Guys wouldn’t hit with helmets if it hurt like hell when they did it.

I wonder if removing safety gear would help the problem. It eliminates the illusion of safety.

Congress Launches Investigation No problem cannot be made worse unless the government is involved.

Hard to say. There are plenty of concussions in rugby which has minimal body armor.
My daughter’s then boyfriend lost an appointment to West Point because of one.

I agree with you. It is almost certain that the “higher number” now is because of the stringent reporting requirements. I am sure that there were plenty of concussions 10 years ago that were not reported by players.

Football is a violent sport and the speed/strength of these men is more than it was decades ago. There will always be concussions, but the new targeting rules (while unpopular) will probably cut down on some avoidable ones.

This is exactly why we should not have a Senator or of course House member ever again near the White House.

I think closer scrutiny is exactly what happened, like you say.

If the sport is going to involve huge really fast dudes running into each other and falling down there isn’t anything that will stop their brains from changing direction really fast that I can see. Getting a concussion and then continued jarring of the brain might be worse, but I don’t see how you stop the many, many lesser blows over time in the course of a football career into the pros.

Around 25 years ago I was talking to the trainer at Southern Miss. I was telling him how back in the early 60s we thought the suspension helmets were something of a wonder.

He showed me a then current helmet and I noticed it had a lot of foam. He said they originally used them for players who had suffered a concussion but then realized that if they were better for them, they would be better for everyone.

At the time I thought that would probably eliminate a lot of concussions but obviously was wrong. I do remember when our old high school coaches taught us to put the name Riddell right between the numbers then slide your (head) helmet off to the side and follow up the tackle with the shoulder while wrapping up with the arms.

Leading with the crown of the helmet is now outlawed.

Of course it is and it should be totally expected. Good Lord, how do these people not grasp the obvious ?

They put protocols in place to evaluate the bejeezus out of everyone at every game taking hits to identify. And this dipwad writer expects surprise and shock ?

I know. Dumb question.
