If a 2009 Chevy Malibu got in a head-on collision with a 1959 Chevrolet Bel Air, which car would emerge with the least amount of damage? At first glance, you'd expect an old tank like the Bel Air to obliterate the Malibu, right? But nothing could be further from the truth.

They destroyed a 1959 Bel Air for no valid reason.
Totally agree.
Consumer Reports also hates (HATES!) Jeep Wranglers - because consumers should not have the "right" to take the doors and top off of their own vehicles and do as they please. The god of "Safety" must be pacified.

A 1958 Chevy would have been just as bad ,, all the 1958-1964 fullsize GM's were deathtraps with that idiotic "X" frame... you can see in the video how the car nearly folded in half , shed the drivers door and allowed the dash to intrude far into the cabin...
Boy, that’s horrible. Thought the ‘58 was a square (ladder) frame.
My cousin had a ‘58 up on blocks in my Grandparent’s yard while he was in Vietnam for 4 years.
Lotsa fun for an 8 year old kid to play in. I pretended to take my first road test in it. (grin)
Yes, you can tell that will fold in the middle.
Wow, that is actually frightening. My parents had a ‘59 Buick Invicta with the huge fins. I wonder if my Dad knew he was driving a car with a wishbone like that.

Did the 1964 Impala which is so popular for restoration have that frame?
Some interesting history on the X-frame here:
Also, the guy who sold the 1959 Chevy in the video to GM chimes in in the comments section. He says the car was not a rust bucket.

Some Buicks did , some didn’t according to an article linked in one of the posts here Olds always had side rails on their version of this frame..
