No it was plague, rare but still out there. I can't remember what pine nuts had to do with it. Maybe people came to harvest pine nuts and the rats came to eat them and people were bitten by the fleas from the rats.

Some knowledgeable person will come along and tell me I am wrong, happens to me all the timeLOL!

30 years ago we used to hunt elk on the Indian reservations and I remember it from those hunts.
