College presidents have always received a lot of mail. But these days we get more than ever. Much of it relates to student unrest, and most of the messages are unpleasant.
Our usual practice is to thank the sender for writing and leave it at that. The combination of receiving more than 100 emails and letters a day and recognizing that the purpose of many writers is to rebuke, rather than discuss, leaves us little choice about how to respond.
But that certainly doesnât mean we donât think long and hard about the issues being raised. Some writers ask why our campus is so focused on how âblack lives matter.â Others express a mixture of curiosity and rage about microaggressions and trigger warnings. And finally, what about those oft-criticized âsafe spacesâ? On this last topic, here are two stories. The first was told to me privately by another institutionâs president, and the second takes place at my institution, Northwestern University.
A group of black students were having lunch together in a campus dining hall. There were a couple of empty seats, and two white students asked if they could join them. One of the black students asked why, in light of empty tables nearby. The reply was that these students wanted to stretch themselves by engaging in the kind of uncomfortable learning the college encourages. The black students politely said no. Is this really so scandalous?

WLDM—White Lives Don’t Matter. This movement is not only anti-white, it is anti free market and pro marxist.
However did I survive, back in the day, without a safe space?
“I’m Northwestern’s president and I’ll be resigning in a few months.”
That warm, wet feeling in your ear (or eyes, reading...) isn’t from globally warmed rain.
Bingo! Better than my post.
Safe spaces for black students only, you mean. Now they are voluntarily segregating. I am dumbfounded.
I don’t think I’ve ever read a Washington Post article where all the comments were against a liberal writer until now.
Northwestern obviously needs an Aryan House so that the Nazis will have a safe space without fear of confrontation.
I wonder, when the students he is coddling apply for their first post-graduation job, will they ask, “Where is the Safe Space here at XYZ Industries?”
We are raising a nation of uneducated wimps.
That makes two of us for sure.
Ja, Ja!
I’m sure nobody on FR needs reminding, but college is not supposed to be an intellectual safe space. It’s supposed to be intellectually challenging and unsafe, a place where preconceived notions and ill-thought-out biases go to be slaughtered.
The reply was that these students wanted to stretch themselves by engaging in the kind of uncomfortable learning the college encourages. The black students politely said no.

I'm so glad Obama created a post-racial society in America.
The left does not realize that they were the Nazis back in the day (National Socialists). They are trying for totalitarian power by just switcching the master race and who they blame for all lifes troubles. Same game, different day.
Can you imagine asking for “safe space” in BCT at Ft. Benning, or RVN?
And of course if a network or newspaper would have seen two whites choose to not sit at that table, or if two blacks would have gone to sit down with a group of whites and been told they couldn’t we would be called racist.
Nope.
