For most of us, the National Do Not Call Registry is a blessing we could scarcely live without. After all, it keeps us from getting annoying calls at all hours of the day.
However, for this gentleman, you can tell that a telemarketing call isnât just an annoyance, it's an opportunity!
I’ve gotten calls that ID says are from MY number. The one they’re calling
Cute...they get an earful! Are they using my number to call others too??
I kept getting calls from Mary Weir. One day I called the number back and asked for Mary Weir. I told her what someone was doing with her phone number without her knowledge. I got the feeling that she nearly fainted but I never got a call from her number again. That is when I started getting calls from different numbers.
Try to find out a number that has been disconnected. Call that number, you’ll get a 3 beep tone. Record it. Put that recording first on your answering machine, it tells the computer calling that your number is disconnected and it shuts down the call, usually before the 3rd beep and puts you on their dead number list. No more calls.
This is what a commercially available blocker does, I think it’s called Tele Zapper. You can just put your normal answering machine message after the 3 beeps, but as long as that’s the first thing the computer hears, your number is removed from their calling list, since it’s considered a disconnected number.
I’ve had pretty good results with the do not call list, I get nothing on my cell phone, a few political calls, and they decided to exempt themselves. Bastards. The home phone is my sister’s number, we don’t get too many, the usual political calls and a few stray telemarketers, I usually hang up. If I’m in a weird mood I’ll act gay and try to pick the guy up, cuss them out, demand a supervisor, whatever I can think up.
I say “You must deal with a lot of rejection on your job, and I’m just one more. Good luck.” and hang up. They’re busy trying to make a buck, and I’m usually still open at dinner time, so I’m busy too.
