I did that in my inner-city middle school and those kids accomplished wonderful things. We made a little bubble in the middle of the crazy. Yes, and very good, but the teachers' union doesn't exactly help out, does it?

Yes, and very good, but the teachers' union doesn't exactly help out, does it? I have never had to have any dealings with the union. My experience (and I'm on my 12th year) is that if you have a good relationship with the principal and the counselor, and you all work together, you can arrange little pockets of sanity for the good kids.
