Can you live with yourself is you ran away and left your wife/daughter to be violated (and possibly killed)?
Would your wife/daughter ever trust you to protect them, ever?
Fighting back changes the odds and if you die, at least she has a chance to get away and like a previous poster pointed out, the feral cowards do not hang around after a shooting.
Honor is important. Courage is important. Being a man is important.
No one knows what they would do in a situation like this. This guy may have thought in his mind that the best chance for survival is to do what he did. That any thing else was sure death for both of them.We also do not know the age of the father or his health condition, he could have been anywhere from his mid 30’s to mid 60’s. We just don’t know all the circumstances.

When I was in my early teens my father told me that a man has to be many things at different times, but two things he must have at all times in order to be a man are honor and courage. Lack either one and you are not a man.
