I can't even get over the fact that a nonspinning top falls over, while a spinning top stays upright.

That reminds me of watching the Winter Olympics in the 1980s and 1990s, of Scott Hamilton, Brian Boitano, Kristi Yamaguchi, Tara Lipinski, Paul Wylie, Nancy Kerrigan, Michelle Kwan and others doing those elegant high-speed spins on ice, ever so rarely looking askew on a small spot of the ice. Brian Boitano was a master at it.

Conservation of angular momentum. Just as it’s difficult to deflect an object in flight along a straight line, it’s equally difficult to change the rotational axis of an object that is spinning at high speed.

Newton will not be denied.
