The many trade treaties like GATT and NAFTA, we have signed include what amounts to a suicide pill. Raise tariffs and the other signers get to kill you. This is why trade treaties are so dangerous. They cede sovereignty to a foreign court. We would get hurt much more than we can stand by the retaliation that we signed up for and agreed to.
(The TPP will be America’s coup de grace.)
