Remember the excitement on Dec. 6? Not only did the College Football Playoff selection committee spit out two appetizing semifinal matchups, it delivered a New Year's Six slate seemingly packed with steak and sizzle.
The games turned out to be empty calories. New Year's Six? Try the New Year's Snooze, a series of blowouts that left us bloated and unsatisfied. All six contests were decided by 14 points or more. Average margin of victory: 24.2 points.
Alabama fans and Clemson fans are thrilled. The same holds for those who support Stanford, Ohio State, Houston and Ole Miss. They watched their teams win without having their blood pressure spike. Oh, and the S-E-C chant is back. You know you missed it.
The New Year's Six had less tension than a vat of Jell-O (or a Big 12 defense). But the games, as always, provided some takeaways.
Here are six from the New Year's Six:

I learned that Jim McElwain is the second coming of Will Muschamp.
All 6'2" of her!
You’re describing Mrs. POF...and I’m not that sure about the “no interaction except with me” part.
We also learned that Carly Fio-RINO is a pandering idiot who went against her alma mater in a cheap stunt that anyone could see right through.
“The new opiate of the masses.”
That thought has been rolling around my brain for quite a while. This is part of the bread and circuses, while the empire burns.
So you want to take to take what’s making it wrong and expand that? Why not just have a 64 team playoff? Why not just replace college football with minor league teams for the pros? The problem is they’ve let people who like professional footvall, but not college football turn college football into pro football. They should get rid of the playoff. College football is better when it’s allowed to be what it is.
Agreed.
“Alabama fans and Clemson fans are thrilled”........
same for Buckeye and Wolverine fans!
Way to Go - BLUE!
Sounds like he’s fully drugged and sedated - but I guess at his age it doesn’t matter.
Unfortunately, olemiss won. The school of Trent Lott and Sthepherd Sthmith.
They just make up bowls these days. Growing up in the “old days” I remember the main ones and now with the “new names” I can’t even know which is which unless they say the “old” name with the new “sponsor”.
Ridiculous.
Mississippi State, too, but I didn’t notice them being mentioned.
I learned that McCaffrey is one helluva football player.
They won the day before. Dak Prescott, the greatest quarterback in Mississippi college history, eviscerated NC State.
Yikes!
I remember back when only one Big Ten team was allowed to go to any bowl game, you either won the Big Ten championship or your season was over in November.
Nope...no drugs or sedation. Just his ‘life choices’.
The CFP committee did a good job....it’s just that Oklahoma and Michigan State did not. The two best teams are in the Finals. That’s all you can ask for.
As for the Bowls, there are so many automatic conference tie ins that much of this work is fill in the blank...not a match up on purpose.
Best bowl game this season so far? Duke 44-41 over Indiana.
C’mon, man. Tall is good!
That’s true...often in some of the major bowls, you have a very disappionted team that was thinking being in a playoff....versus an up and coming team thrilled to be in that bowl. The motivation edge often ends up as a massive margin in the game.
Teams take very different agendas and motivations into these various bowls....
