At last night's New Year's Eve gathering I got into a discussion over the poll that showed the Pope tied with Donald Trump for the second most admired person.
The Trump supporters were wildly happy about him being compared to a person of such high position. They felt it put in him into an almost exalted status and really reinforced their support.
The Catholics present, all very conservative, were saddened almost to the point of embarrassment that their leader, the very top person of the entire Catholic church couldn't get more votes than a NYC reality TV star. They felt it said a lot about his liberal, populist positions and how they undermined so many of the Church's traditional positions.
The discussion among the Catholics only had to be abandoned, possibly due to some social drinking. We never did come to a consensus on whether Trump should be more embarrassed by being compared to such a lefty, or the Pope should be more embarrassed by being compared to a trash talking TV personality.
You should have just had another drink.
What does it matter if you think so little of both of them?

The author should try READING and they would find that Trump did things other than being a “TV personality”.
As a Presbyterian, Trump knows that the Pope is just a man and a sinner and is not special. But this Pope is obviously a serious South American Leftist of the worst kind. And Trump did build large buildings with his name on them. Not really the life’s work of the typical “TV Personality”.
Oh, I did. A couple more, in fact.
This statement implies that somebody believes the Pope is not a man and is not a sinner. Who do you think believes that?
The ‘poll’ is little more than a name recognition/recall exercise among the lazy and ignorant, as Hillary’s annual appearance on the female side testifies. It is an excuse for Gallup to advertise its brand and to drum up poll subscriptions from a dwindling number of newspapers. Both the newspapers and the craven, cowardly Gallup should be shuttered.

Focus on the “special” part of my comment. There is no “Vicar of Jesus Christ”. That’s a claim of being pretty special.
Is the Pope Catholic?...seriously, is he?
I agree, and the venue for the discussion was appropriate. A few friends, celebrating excessively, trying to stay awake till midnight. The poll was given just the recognition it deserved, a semi-inebriated thrashing.
Happy New Year.
He’s as Catholic as POTUS is American.
Interesting times we find ourselves in.
Some popes like JPII cross over into universal respect. Others like this one only appeal to those inside that one branch of Christianity.
I find this ridiculous. NO Catholic I know could care less about who is named the most popular person. Pure secular culture nonsense. Period.
How do we uphold our faith in the one true
Church, while a troubling person is head?

I wondered how long before this thread would get hit by Catholics coming to bat for their Marxist Pope. Its here for all to see. And on the most conservative forum on the web no less.
the catholic government trumps the American and all other governents....... it’s in the book somewhere
I agree, but at the same time, the media is only reporting what the pope says when it suits their agenda, and they are not above a ridiculous headline that has nothing to do with what he says. Of course he should shut up about economics and global warming, subjects he knows next to nothing about. There was a post the other day that ‘Pope says athiests may go to heaven. In reality he said something to the order that God’s mercy was infinite and that non believers should obey their conscience. It has always been the Church’s teaching that they don’t know who is going to heaven, that is God’s domain. The headline was quite literally, bullshit.
