I suspect that because the Spanish were the old Colonial oppressors, the people rejected the language. I guess since the United States held it for just a few decades and then allowed self rule and independence they didn't hate us so much, especially after the Japanese occupation.

In as much as they were a Spanish colony they have just as much right to the term as a South American.

The Philippines was a Spanish colony.
The Philippines may have been a Spanish Colony, but they evolved a completely different culture and had a completely different history. They are even less Latino than Australia is American.
