The really stupid part is, even if student loans were financed at 1/2%, college costs would be too high, and therefore people would end up with an unsustainable DEBT load (regardless of the interest rate).

If you cannot afford to pay back the principal (or it will be a real struggle), the rate of interest is not relevant.
